Kabul Kitchen

Come in, sit down.

Afghan food on Lincoln Road, Addington. Mantu, kabuli pulao and the charcoal kebabs, cooked the way we'd eat them ourselves.

We're not fancy. The food's good, there's plenty of it, and a family of four eats properly for under a hundred bucks.

Tuesday to Sunday. Weeknights we open at 5. Saturday and Sunday we're going from midday, so the weekend is a lunch as well as a dinner.

What we cook

Three dishes, and this is honestly what they are.

Mantu. Dumplings. My mum makes the pastry by hand every morning before we open, which is why we sell out of it. Some nights it's gone.

Kabuli pulao. The rice dish, and there's plenty of it.

Charcoal kebabs. Done over the charcoal.

Ask us what's in something. Nobody minds the question, and we have never once put a dish on the menu we would not eat ourselves.

What it costs

We're not expensive. A family of four eats properly for under a hundred bucks.

Who eats here

Families mostly, and big tables on the weekend. A lot of the Afghan community come in, and it's about half Kiwi families now. Weeknights we get people after work.

People tell us it tastes like someone's home rather than a restaurant. That's their line, not ours.

You eat here, or we cook for your function

We did the food for about 200 people when the mosque had its opening. Took three days.

That's the job we point at when somebody asks whether we can feed a room. Ring us, tell us how many and what day, and we'll talk it through on the phone.

We also do the food for functions
